Welcome to Cimitero delle Fontanelle, a Naples cemetery where the bones of over 40,000 Plague victims are kept.
While it may seem a bit morbid or macabre, the site serves a sentimental purpose for the people of Naples. There is a long-held tradition in Napoli in which locals choose a skull and dedicate it to one of their lost loved ones. From that moment forward, they treat that skull as a personal shrine or memorial, bringing flowers, cigarettes, and other gifts for the spirit of the one they lost.
In reality, Cimitero delle Fontanelle is a peaceful and quiet place, open to the public and free to visit. It is a bit out of the city centre, tucked away underground beyond an array of winding side streets, but absolutely worth a visit when you’re in Naples. I hope you enjoy my photos in the meantime!
Thanks for checking out my photos!
I hope to share many more travel, art & culture related collections in the future!
